Conservation drive pays off

Manama : Water and electricity worth BD566417 was conserved through Electricity and Water Conservation Campaign for Hotels which began in July last year, according to Chief of Water Conversation, Eng Abdul Ameer Hassan Al-Mutawa.

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) campaign was aimed at raising public awareness through various programmes to conserve electricity and water resources, protect and sustain the environment.

The campaign was launched in co-operation with Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) to reduce electricity and water consumption in the hospitality sector.

“We had 16 hotels participating in the campaign and we were able to save BD36,650 worth water. Our target was to reduce the water consumption by three per cent but I am happy to say that with the participation of the stakeholders we were able to reduce the consumption by 3.6 per cent,” said Al-Mutawa told DT News on the sidelines of the concluding ceremony of the campaign, which was organised by EWA in cooperation with BTEA.

The ceremony was held yesterday at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Center where the hotels were awarded for their achievements in conservation.

“The one-year campaign helped reduce water  consumption by three per cent. We started off with targeting first-class hotels and we are extremely happy with the achievements. Most of the hotels have reduced their electricity and water consumption and we believe this is significant as it helps the hotels reduce their bills and it helps us to save the energy,” Eng Adnan Moh’d Fakhro, Vice Chief Executive Distribution & Customer Services, EWA, said.

“Further, we are looking forward to getting all the stakeholders on board with this campaign in collaboration with BTEA,” Fakhro added.

“We are so glad to have saved 10 per cent electricity consumption worth BD529, 767 through the campaign in these first class hotels. The campaign’s main objective was to sustain resources for a long term. The campaign started off with a series of inspections, site visits, motivating the participants to follow the procedures and guidelines to achieve the target,” Eng. Ali Mirza, Head of Operations - Electricity Conservation Section said.

The Electricity Achievement Award went to the Gulf Hotel Bahrain with a reduction of 27 per cent consumption, followed by Downtown Rotana with 19 per cent and Crowne Plaza with 14 per cent.

The Water Achievement Award went to Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa with a reduction of 22.5 per cent, followed by Four Season Hotel Bahrain Bay with a reduction of 17.5 per cent and Al Areen Palace and Spa with a reduction of 12 per cent.
