Bahraini sailor detained in Qatar

Manama : A Bahraini sailor and two others were reportedly detained by Qatari authorities on charges of trespassing into their regional waters.

According to reports, the crew -  Bahraini Mustafa Hassan, 30, and two others - were fishing on the high seas when their boat ran out of fuel and drifted into the regional water of Qatar.

They were reportedly arrested from the northwestern Qatari waters on Sunday by a Qatari coastguard team.

Hassan’s family members said the men left Bahrain from the coastal village of Al Dair in Muharraq Governorate last week and they haven’t heard from them since then.

Hassan and the two Asian fishermen, according to reports, were produced before Qatari Public Prosecution and were remanded into judicial custody.

Family members said they have approached the authorities here “to interfere and release Hassan and the two others.”

The incident came to public attention when the family members of the sailor circulated a message online seeking help from the authorities and public to locate their missing son.

There is, however, no official confirmation available on the developments.
