More than 40 people died on Bahrain roads in 2017
Manama : More than 40 lives perished in road accidents in the Kingdom in the first three quarters of 2017, according to a recently-released statistics from the General Directorate of Traffic.
Most of these accidents, according to the report, were caused by motorists jumping red signals, over speeding as well as speaking on mobile phones while driving.
The Directorate said there occurred 932 road accidents in the Kingdom between January and October 2017, claiming 42 lives and leaving another 890 people injured. 377 people sustained serious injuries.
In 2016, the Kingdom recorded a total of 1,408 accidents, leading to the death of 47 people, while 1,300 were injured.
As per law 23 of 2014, tougher punishments are in force in the Kingdom to prevent traffic violations, besides introducing a points system in February 2016.
Introducing the system, Director-General of Traffic Shaikh Nasser bin Abdullah Al Khalifa said, “The system was meant to promote the sense of responsibility among drivers, especially those who intentionally violate traffic rules.”
