‘Wrong traffic behaviours’ killed many last year: report

Manama : “Wrong traffic behaviours” resulted in a high percentage of the overall deaths last year, said a senior traffic official  yesterday.

Lieutenant General Osama Bahar, during a special radio show, said that at least seven such cases, involving motorcycles, were reported last year resulting in the loss of seven lives.

“The year 2017 witnessed seven deaths and 150 injuries caused by traffic accidents involving motorbikes,” said the Traffic Culture Director in the General Directorate of Traffic during the show organised by the Police Media Directorate and aired on the national radio channel.

“Most of the accidents were caused by wrong traffic behaviours and lack of adherence to traffic rules and regulations,” he said during the talk show.

Stressing the need to obey traffic law to ensure safety, Bahar said motorcyclists are likely to suffer more injuries if involved in an accident as the vehicle do not safely encase the occupant.

Statistics said accidents involving motorcycles are on the rise in the Kingdom with at least three deaths reported last month. The accidents involved private motorcycles, delivery bikes and dirt bikes.

Accidents involving motorcycles are also found to increase during the winter season when the weather conditions are more suitable for riding.

According to Bahar, there are over 17,000 registered motorbikes and 33,000 license holders in the Kingdom.

Pointing to the usage of dirt bikes during the camping season, he also urged parents to ensure that their kids are riding appropriate bikes for their age and to supervise them.
