Archers hit bullseye in Sharjah

Manama : Bahrain Archery Club added another glorious moment to their credit at the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), being held in Sharjah.

On the fourth day, the quadrat of Maryam Al Jaber, Sara Marzooqi and Maryam Salmeen secured the archery team gold medal, beating runners-up Sharjah Ladies Club and third-placers Al Ain.

In the singles event, Sara Al Maezooqi sealed Bahrain’s double, taking home the competition’s silver medal. Sharjah’s Sumaya Al Mansoori took the gold, while Noora Haroon, also of Sharjah, completed the podium.

Bahrain chef de mission Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa was present at the awarding ceremony, as she congratulated the team on the gold medal victory.

Elsewhere, the Youth and Sports Ministry team outplayed Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah United 92-47 for their second successive victory in the basketball tournament.

The Bahrainis faced little challenge from their opponents and hit strong in all four quarters. The result put the ministry’s team ahead in the competition and will play their next match today against Kuwait Girls Club.

In volleyball, Muharraq Club suffered a 2-3 defeat to hosts Sharjah Ladies Club (19-25, 25-15, 25-19, 17-25, 13-15) in a well-battled match. It was the second straight defeat for Muharraq, who lost 1-3 to Al Wasl in the tournament opener. 

The Bahrainis are now fourth in this six-team group with one point. Sharjah top the group with five points from two wins.
