Become a Volunteer

Manama : The Capital Governorate announced the launch of the first edition of the “Capital Governorate Volunteering Passport” in association with the United Nations Bahrain, and six UN agencies, yesterday. 

The project aims to empower the community to improve their own and others’ lives by volunteering in different events and encourages youth to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals agreed by 193 countries in a historic United Nations summit in 2015. 

The primary objective of the programme is to centralize Governorate’s volunteering initiatives under one platform. The United Nations Volunteers (UNV), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are part of the project.

Commenting on the initiative, Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Governor of the Capital Governorate, said, “The project aims to codify voluntary work and give it international accreditation with the United Nations Office in Bahrain as part of an innovative programme to unify volunteer courses in the Kingdom.”

“I call upon all concerned parties to work towards the importance of joint cooperation in order to promote the culture of volunteerism and grow to it meet the highest international standards,” the governor added. 

“We congratulate the Capital Governorate for being the first governorate in Bahrain to undertake the approach of sustainable development goals,” said UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Bahrain, Amin El Sharkawi.   

He added: “The United Nations believes that the Volunteering Passport can benefit from the opportunities offered by the SDGs through teaching the volunteers, via professional training programs, how to integrate the goals in action plans and voluntary programs in order to achieve development goals.”
