A literary tribute to poetic legend
Manama : A Literary Tribute to the Tamil Poetic legend Kavikko Abdul Rahman is being organised together by various Tamil social organisations in Bahrain on coming Friday at the Indian club starting at 6.00 p.m.
The great literary celebrity was attributed with the title “Kavikko” which means “The King of Poets”. He passed away last year on June 2, 2017, at Chennai. His poetry collections have won great critical acclaim, and his collection, “Aalapanai” won him the “Sahitya Academy Award” for Tamil Poetry in 2009. He was one of the few poets with multilingual talent who experimented with forms in Tamil poetry, including Haiku, Ghazal and Sufi elements into his poetry. He did a research on the poetic notations in Tamil Language and received a Doctorate for the same.
Well known writer and orator Professor Suba Veerapandian will be delivering a literary speech in remembrance of Kavikko and about his writings. It is worth to mention that Kavikko earlier visited Bahrain on Jan 11, 2008, to participate in Pongal Celebration and for a Releasing ceremony of the book “Bonsai”, a poetry compilation written by a longtime Bahrain resident Abdul Qaiyum.
The Tamil literary event is expected to attract at least 600 literary enthusiasts and poetic fans. All prominent literary celebrities have sent their wishes for the success of the programme and have shared their experiences recalling their memories with Kavikko. A memorable souvenir will be released to pay tribute to the great poet. A poetic competition is also being held in praise of kavikko. Entry for the event is free.
