Aisha claims taekwondo crown
Manama : Aisha Mohammed Mubarak took the under-42kg category gold medal for the 2003-05 age category in the taekwondo championships, part of the ongoing Fifth School Mini Olympics.
The fifth edition of the Mini Olympics is being organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, with over 3,500 students from 58 government and private schools competing in a record 20 sports this year.
Representing Team Heroes, Aisha defeated final rival Kiwthana Sajth of the Indian School, who settled for the silver. Angel Paulose, also of Team Heroes, took the bronze.
In the same age category, Sama’a Hameed of Bahrain School topped the under-36kg section. She was followed by schoolmate Hawra A. Reda and Maria Salah of Aces team in second and third places, respectively.
More than 400 students, divided into different age and weight categories, battled it out at the Bahrain Table Tennis Association hall in Riffa and were witnessed by a large crowd of the participants’ families.
Elsewhere, Tubli and Barbar reached the semi-finals of the handball championship, being held at the Bahrain Handball Association gym in Um Al Hassam, after coming first and second, respectively, in Group ‘A’.
Seven teams – Barbar, Al Ittifaq, Tubli, Um Al Hassam, Bahrain Club, Al Ittihad and Al Noor School, were placed in Group ‘A’ in the handball competition, in which 21 matches were played in this group. In Group ‘B’, Samaheej topped the competition with 13 points from three wins and two draws, while Al Ahli were second with 12 points, including three wins, one draw and a single defeat. Al Shabab, Al Tadamon, Hawar School and Al Dair were the other teams in this group.
Meanwhile, 63 students took to the sea as the sailing championships got underway at the Bahrain Maritime Sports Association premises in Muharraq. The participants were divided into four categories, with each featuring three races to determine the overall winners.
In the Laser 4.7, Hamad Isa, Abdulla Hazeem and Yousef Ahmed shared the lead with 10 points each, while Yara Hani topped the under-10 optimist class with 23 points. She was followed by silver medalist Malak Al Dossary. Khalifa Al Dossary won the optimist boys gold with 32 points, with Sajjah Ali (14 points) taking silver.
In the boys’ optimists under-14, Yousef Khalid (21 points) notched the category gold medal, followed by Mohammed Ala’a (11) and Bara Hani (4) in second and third-places, respectively.
