Man gets five years jail for smuggling drugs

ManamaThe First High Criminal Court yesterday sentenced a Bahraini man to five years imprisonment and a fine of BD3, 000 for smuggling drugs from Pakistan in jars filled with pickles.

The case file shows that the man, 22, was arrested by Bahrain International Airport Police on arrival from Pakistan on March 28, 2017.

The police officer at the airport was suspicious about the man’s behaviour and ordered a thorough search of his luggage. 180 gramme of methamphetamine, locally known as Shabu, was found stashed in two jars of pickles hidden within the man’s clothes.

He confessed to use the drug for over four years and that he told the interrogators that he had travelled to Pakistan to get married. There, he discovered that the drug is available at prices as low as BD3.5 per gramme, while the same quantity is sold for BD400 here. The man told that he decided to purchase the drugs and smuggle them into Bahrain for personal use.

However, he was found guilty of smuggling drugs with the intention of selling, and possessing and abusing drugs.
