A petition has been launched by a Bahrain-based animal rights activist urging the government to curb the menace of animal abuse in the Kingdom.
Launched on the website 'change.org,' the petition has gathered 1,740 signatures so far.
The petitioner stated, "In the recent years, there has been a staggering increase in the stray animal population in the Kingdom. They have become a common sight across the Kingdom and animal abuse has become rampant.”
“Those involved in such crimes either do it recreationally or without understanding the seriousness of the action. Unfortunately, a more sinister dimension of abuse has emerged recently. Dog fighting, animal fighting, animal baiting and puppy factories are a popular few ones,” she said.
He said such individuals are only motivated by profit and totally disregard the bloody outcome of their actions. Spectators enjoy seeing vicious fights, which at times involve docile animals being pitted against more aggressive ones, she added.
"Those involved in the abuse believe they are immune from consequences and so they publish picture and videos on social media with little fear. We need these abhorrent acts to be ceased,” she stated.
She request the authorities to engage with animal protection societies and charities to establish best practices in ending abuse of animals.
She commented no modern society can tolerate abuse and torture of innocent animals even for profit or pleasure.
“The consequences of committing animal cruelty should be known to all and it should be enforced in a consistent and strict manner. Budget allocation for animal societies and programmes such as a Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate and Release CNVR will air animal welfare services in the Kingdom," she added.
