UoB Foundation Programme in Higher Education held
Manama : The University of Bahrain’s (UoB) English Language Center and English Department yesterday organised an international conference entitled ‘Foundation Programmes in Higher Education, A Gateway to Success’. 150 scholars from Bahrain and GCC took part in the programme.
The conference, held under the patronage of the president of UoB Prof. Riyadh Yousif Hamza, was the first-of-its-kind in Bahrain and the MENA region.
Commenting on the event, Director of ELC, Dr Ghada Ahmed Jasim said: “A foundation programme is a base for a degree at a later stage. If we have a solid foundation, we can guarantee success for students.”
“We have a committee to look and develop the curriculum, it not only focuses on theory but also enables the students in critical thinking and developing their personality,” she said.
“The new programme is definitely more comprehensive than before. It meets the student needs. Moreover, we not only teach students English but also lifelong learning skills required for critical thinking,” said Abubaker Alhitty, a Professor UoB.
“I addressed the audience on how to cultivate a reading habit because that’s something we have been working really hard as it’s really crucial to acquire knowledge. In this digital era, we try and incorporate online reading programmes where we motivate young minds to read,” said Kate Tindle, from Zayed University.
