Driver gets six months jail for reckless driving

ManamaA Bahraini man was sentenced  to six months imprisonment on Monday  by the Lower Criminal Court (Traffic) for reckless driving and endangering the lives of motorists and road users.

The 18-year-old driver was seen dangerously drifting his car at a vital intersection near Sanad, the video footage of the incident was recorded. The court also decided to withdraw the man’s driving license for one year.

As reported on DT News last Wednesday, the incident took place at the junction between Istiqlal Highway and Mahzoura Avenue on March 23.

As seen in a short video that went viral on local social media networks, the driver illegally performed a tyre-smoking drift at the junction, close to oncoming traffic.

He also covered the vehicle’s number plates using a piece of cloth while he performed the stunt.

Traffic Prosecution Deputy Chief Attorney Mohammed Al Dhahrani recently confirmed that “investigations led to the vehicle, which was parked next to the suspect’s residence in the nearby area of Hijjiyat in Riffa”.

“He was arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution, where he confessed in the interrogation to the accusations against him. The prosecution ordered to detain the driver pending further investigation, in order to refer him to the concerned court as soon as possible,” Al Dhahrani said in a statement released by the Public Prosecution on March 26.

The General Directorate of Traffic has been tightening its grip on reckless drivers and violators of the traffic law, especially with the increasing illegal car stunts and street races in the Kingdom lately. The General Directorate this year announced the arrest of several drivers who were mostly seen breaking the traffic rules on videos posted on the internet.
