ManamaA tribute was paid to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa who commuted the death penalty to life imprisonment, sparing the lives of convicts who were indicted in the terror case 1 of 2017. National Institution of Human Rights (NIHR) President Maria Khoury extended deepest thanks and appreciation to HM the King. Speaking on behalf of the NIHR Board of Commissioners and affiliates, she hailed the wise royal gesture which reflects HM the King’s love for his people and keenness on promoting tolerance.

She said that an NIHR team had attended all the military court sessions to ensure fair trial guarantees in compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and other international instruments, international and regional human rights declarations. She hailed the royal move which is also in line with guarantees stipulated in the constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the law on the judiciary, the law on penal procedures and other relevant national legislation which govern the military and civil judiciary.

NIHR Vice President Abdulla Al-Durazi hailed HM the King’s noble and royal gesture which, he said, brought joy to the convicts’ families. He paid tribute to HM the King who had issued many royal pardon decrees, epitomizing the culture of forgiveness, tolerance and community reconciliation.
