Ministry warns against obesity surgeries

Manama : If you are planning to go under the knives to cut your weight, its time to exercise caution! The Ministry of Health has warned against conducting surgeries that are not internationally agreed and even prohibited in some healthy developed countries including Bahrain, because of their impact and adverse complications on health, at times even causing death.

The ministry stressed the need to resort to specialised medical centres in this area and to accredited doctors to conduct surgeries to combat obesity. The ministry said that Salmaniya Medical Complex had received some cases of those who underwent such surgeries outside Bahrain and led to serious complications.

There are also some methods used to treat obesity that have proved to be failures including the process of inserting a balloon into stomach. “The National Health Regulatory Authority, is keen to establish high quality standards for citizens and residents of the Kingdom of Bahrain has warned and even prevented from conducting this method In the Kingdom of Bahrain.”

“The treatment of obesity should be carried out by a trained surgical team and a specialised committee consisting of a multidisciplinary team that studies and evaluates all cases and decides the appropriate decision to conduct such surgery, especially for children, as in the case at the SMC.

“Citizens and residents should follow healthy lifestyles, such as healthy nutrition and physical activity, and not to resort to erroneous practices, unreliable or unreliable surgeries and from unlicensed sources.”
