Cyclone Mekunu rained blessings on stranded ship crew
Cyclone Mekunu turned out to be the unlikely savior for three crew members of a Bahraini ship who were finally able to return to the land after being stranded in a ship stationed at the anchorage in Salalah in Oman for many months.
The severe cyclonic storm Mekunu was the most intense tropical cyclone to hit the Arabian peninsula. Though it took the lives of many in the region, damaged properties and houses, Mekunu served a blessing for the trio, who was yearning to return to the land.
The crew members, two of them Arabs, one from Jordan, one from Syria along with a Myanmar national were rescued by Omani Coastguards hours before Mekunu struck Salalah. They were living at the anchorage for more than eight months.
Recounting the terrifying night in which they were rescued, Thu Ya Aung, the Myanmar national and one of the crew members told Tribune, “It was a horrifying experience, the winds were so strong, we felt anything could happen when getting off the ship."
