4,450kg of rotten meat seized, destroyed

Imported meat weighing 4,450kg was disposed of after authorities found it unsuitable for consumption. The meat was seized by the authorities and was destroyed after it was found to be rotten. Concerned citizens complained that unsafe handling and transportation of the meat led to the degradation of the meat. According to the complaint by citizens, the company transported the meat on the truck bed of a pick up without a cover. However, this was found to be untrue as Agriculture and Marine Resources revealed that the meat was already in an inedible state before it was transferred to the truck. Citizens had complained to Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society that the meat was transported by a truck that did not follow safety standards. “We received the complaint from concerned citizens that a company was transporting meat without following safety regulations,” the Society stated. Agriculture and Marine Resources clarified that the meat was already rotten and it was being transported to the designated area to be destroyed. The Society had requested the authorities to take action against the company and prevent the beef from being distributed. The Society received the complaint as part of its ‘Be right, Know your rights’ campaign. Citizens are encouraged to send information or photos or videos of any violations that they come across to the Society. The Society later issued a statement clarifying that the authorities dealt with the issue.
