Food waste on the rise
The total waste produced in the capital has gone up by 33 per cent when compared to last year, according to AlKhaleej Cleaning Company. The company said that food waste saw an increase of 4pc during the same period, constituting 36pc of total waste. The details were presented by the company on the sidelines of the 20th session of the board of the municipality. “Plastic wastes constituted 22pc, while paper and cardboard waste stood at 9.2pc. Glass formed nearly 5pc of total wastes, while close to 30pc was classified as other,” the company said. The study reflects the company’s commitment to provide comprehensive and detailed cleaning services in the governorates in accordance with approved scientific theories including sampling, comparisons and other methods, the company said. According to the company, the study is based on a number of main components derived from practical and scientific facts. “The selected samples from different areas are studied while taking into account the population density in these areas. It also drew some samples during religious and national events such as the holy month of Ramadan, and benefited from comparisons with the results of previous studies.” About 20 samples from selected areas were considered for the study at a place in Askar. The wastes were classified into different group before the study was carried out, the company added.
