The High Sunni Sharia Court granted divorce to a woman in her twenties from her husband after she complained of ill-treatment. The 28-year-old woman filed the divorce lawsuit against her husband, aged 48, citing physical assaults against her. The defendant, who is 20 years her senior, is said to have been attacking her in public and he didn’t provide her with an accommodation to live in. He also didn’t give her a monthly pocket money. Thus, she resorted to the Sharia Court to put an end to her ordeal.
“He was attacking her, insulting her, swearing at her without taking into account their relationship,” the plaintiff’s lawyer Ibtisam Al Sabagh said. “Once, he attacked her inside the car. He slammed the car’s door against her and he punched on the stomach despite being aware that she was pregnant.” Several eyewitnesses were at the scene during the car assault, and they testified before prosecutors. They said that he was smelling alcohol and he was in an abnormal state.
“He didn’t just beat her, but also didn’t give her any pocket money. So she took the decision to end her marriage with him,” lawyer Al Sabagh revealed.
