Court grants abused woman divorce from jailed husband
The Second High Sharia Court (Jaffari) has granted divorce to an Arab woman from her husband who attempted to murder her by attacking her with an axe, throwing her from the third floor and splashing her with acid, Tribune has learnt. The Bahraini husband got his seven-year imprisonment sentence upheld last April by the First High Criminal Court of Appeal and is now in prison.
The victim’s lawyer Fatima BinRajab yesterday confirmed to Tribune that the court granted divorce to her client, 32, from the father of her two children following 14 years of marriage, considering several factors that included the physical and psychological harm the husband caused her and his refusal to financially support her and the children.
Ms BinRajab said that, as the judge announced the verdict, he mentioned that “the defendant’s attack on the plaintiff and damages he caused to her resulted in an irreparable situation in which they are unable to live together”. The judge also mentioned that “the court’s attempts to reach a reconciliation between the couple have failed and the divorce upon the plaintiff’s request is inevitable”.
