Eclipse of the century today

In the old days, there was a tradition amongst the Arabian Gulf children, to go out to the streets during the eclipse of the moon and sing: “Oh carved whale, leave our dear moon... leave it, leave it...what do you want of it”.

These words actually mean: “Oh huge whale, leave our dear moon, let go of it, what do you want of it” People those days used to believe that the moon was devoured by a huge whale. When the eclipse was over, the kids would dance and sing: “Our mauled moon, thank god for your return”, welcoming the return of the moon.

The people of Bahrain and the Gulf have an appointment with the whale on Friday, as the sky above Bahrain and the Middle East shall witness the longest total eclipse of the century. This phenomenon will take place on today evening (July 27) and will last upto the first hours of Saturday (July 28).

This total red coloured eclipse coincides with a clear appearance of the planet Mars, with its red colour setting the background of the eclipse.
