8,774 kg shrimp seized during ban period
Head of Legal Affairs at the Coast Guard, Captain Nayef Isa Al Shaikh, said that 8,774 kg of shrimp were confiscated during the shrimping ban from March 1 to July 31. He said that the Coast Guard carried out inspections to ensure the law enforcement in attempt to protect the marine wealth and the environment, including limiting the use of illegal fishing nets that harm the coral reefs.
He highlighted that the cases were referred to the Public Prosecution, while the seized shrimps were sold in public auctions, and the revenue deposited into the Public Prosecution account. He urged the public to cooperate with the authorities to protect the marine environment by not buying fresh shrimp during the ban season.
He said prior to the ban season, the Coast Guard held meetings with security directorates and concerned authorities to inform them of the shrimp breeding areas and the related violations, while inspection campaigns were held throughout the ban period.
