Revamp work at Manama market ‘right on track’

The revamp work at Manama Central Market is right on track and the Capital Municipality is planning to implement a series of development initiatives at the market.

This came as Shouqia Ibrahim Humaidan, the newly appointed director-general of the Capital Municipality, met with a group of traders from the Central Market and discussed ways to develop the market as per best standards.

The Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning attaches a lot of importance to this market as it is one of the prime markets in the Kingdom.

It is also a vital commercial land mark in the country, said Ms Humaidan. “The revamp work is very much on track. The area for unloading fruits and vegetables will be expanded as activities in the market are set to increase. We will also repair the nearby streets and roads apart from erecting a wall around the market,” said Ms Humaidan.

“A new mechanism will be implemented for parking trucks and it will ensure the smooth flow of traffic.”

A committee representing the traders at the market welcomed the initiatives to revamp the market. They extended their co-operation to the authorities while conveying some of their concerns.
