Military deal will boost Bahrain’s security: Jamal Bu Hassan
Manama
Parliamentarian and parliament's foreign affairs, defence and national security committee vice-chairman, Jamal Bu Hassan yesterday condemned the opposition of human rights groups to the Obama government’s approval of a possible sale of $150 million worth of equipment to Bahrain to maintain its fleet of Lockheed Martin Corp F-16 fighter jets.
Human rights groups had earlier opposed the move, alleging human rights violations in the Kingdom. Bu Hassan said the western human rights groups have their own agendas, which they want to implement in the Kingdom. He criticized the organization for the continuous opposition towards Bahrain, turning a blind eye towards the development of the Kingdom with regards to human rights.
He said he would present the real scenario of Bahrain during a human rights event, to be held in the US in September. The event is being organised by an Italian human rights organisation.
“In the event, I will explain how Bahrain has been protecting the human rights of each and every member of the society,” he said. Jamal Bu Hassan said strengthening the security of Bahrain is very important, as it is a prominent country in the Gulf region.
“Moreover, Bahrain has been facing threat from Iran and the situation in Syria, Iraq and Yemen has worsened over last few years. The security of the Gulf region is very important as it is the hub of oil trade and other financial activities. Therefore, the decision of US to sell F-16 fighter jet equipment is a positive step for the region,” he said.
Bahrain has also participated in the fight against IS in Syria and Iraq and Houthi rebels in Yemen.“The US has recognised the contribution of Bahrain in fighting extremists and terrorists. The decision of the US, which is a long-standing partner of Bahrain, is highly appreciable,” he added.
