Bahrain extend medal win at Asian Games
Oluwakemi Adekoya and Winfred Yavi snared a gold medal each as Bahrain added three medals to their 18th Asian Games tally. The 18th edition of the games is being organised in Jakarta and Palembang.
On the third and penultimate day of athletics, the kingdom’s athletes were in excellent form as they clinched the women’s 400m and 3,000m steeplechase gold, in addition to the women’s 400m bronze, in athletics events at the Main Stadium of the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex.
The result saw Bahrain move up in the medal table with 12 medals in total, including six gold, three silver and three bronze. They are presently in the 12th position in the overall standing and first among Arab countries. In the women’s 400m, Bahrain dominated the show and captured the race gold and bronze medals in style.
Oluwakemi raced to victory in 54.48 seconds to score a new Asian Games record, which she also scored in the 2014 edition in Incheon. She was followed by compatriots Aminat Jamal, who secured podium after coming third in 55.65, just behind silver medalist Thi Lan Quach (55.30) of Vietnam.
