Health authorities urge public to buy meat from only authorised abattoirs
Despite crackdown from the part of authorities, illegal slaughterhouses continue to function in the Kingdom, it is learnt. Experts have been warning of health risks to the public since pictures of illegal slaughterhouses across the Kingdom went viral on social media.
Sources say most of these are unpermitted slaughterhouses, while some having permits flout standards to be followed while slaughtering animals for meat. “Majority of these illegal slaughterhouses don’t have electricity or water facilities and there are no air-conditioners.
“There is no separate room for slaughtering and cutting meat as required by stipulated laws.” A crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses was launched in the Kingdom by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry, a few weeks ago mainly to prevent the sprouting of abattoirs during the Eid Al Adha holidays. Tribune earlier carried reports about barns in the Kingdom that are unfit for livestock.
