Asiad bids adieu

Bahrain’s delegation to the 18th Asian Games, being held in Jakarta and Palembang will attend today the closing ceremony of the games at Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex Main Stadium.

The Kingdom’s athletes concluded their participation at the 18th edition of the games yesterday when Ali Murtada was forced out of the sambo competition’s 90km weight category against Aitbek Aibol in the first fight.

Murtada was trailing 0-4 early in the fight, but came back and levelled the scores at 4-4, only to suffer a wrist injury resulting in his withdrawal from this encounter and declaring the Kazakhstan fighter winner. The Bahraini was rushed to the hospital along with his physician Dr Francisco Chapman and other members of the Bahrain delegation.

Supreme Council for Youth and Sports assistant secretary general and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) secretary general Abdulrahman Askar Murtada, along with BOC board members Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and Khalid Al Khayyat, followed up on the condition of Murtada, the bronze medalist at the Asian Championship in Mongolia earlier this year, who had an x-ray at the hospital.
