‘Wife-beating a normal affair’ Lack of tough legislations blamed amid rising cases of domestic violence against women.
The cases of domestic violence have been on the rise in the Kingdom, hinting that all efforts to end the suffering of many women aren’t yielding right results.
Fifty-one cases of domestic violence were reported in the first quarter of this year, according to Aisha Yateem Centre for Family Guidance, which is being run by the Nahdhat Fataath Al Bahrain Society.
Speaking to Tribune, the centre director Mona Fadhel said that the kingdom’s society is still not serious about fighting one of the biggest evils, which is domestic violence.
Mona said in almost all cases women are at the receiving end of violence. “Women suffer violence at the hands of their husbands, brothers and fathers, and very sadly even there are many men who physically attack their mothers.”
However, maximum cases of domestic violence cases involve violent men targeting their wives. “Beating up wife is a very normal act here. I believe there are not enough laws in the Kingdom to protect the rights of women, especially when it comes to protecting themselves against domestic violence.”
Mona highlighted the need for a powerful legislation to end domestic violence against women. “It will serve as a powerful tool against those who take women for granted.
