Prosecution witnesses to testify in terror trial
Prosecution witnesses will take the stand before the High Appeals Court to give evidence in the appeals of 36 defendants convicted of joining a terrorist cell, which was behind a spate of violent attacks, including a deadly jailbreak.
Fifty-eight men were held in connection with this case, but only 36 of them challenged the initial verdicts which included two death sentences and 19 life imprisonments, while 17 received 15 years in jail each, nine 10 years each, 11 five years each. Two defendants, meanwhile, were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The defendants who were found guilty were convicted of establishing and joining a terrorist group, receiving weapons and explosives training to carry out terrorist attacks, murder, premeditated murder as well as importing, using and possessing explosives, firearms, and ammunition.
They are said to have been responsible for several terrorist assaults including an armed raid on Jau Prison on January 1, 2017, during which 10 inmates escaped and a guard was killed.
