AWS Data Centre to be a game changer for start-ups in Mideast

The regional Amazon Web Services Data Centre, which is scheduled to be established in Bahrain by early 2019 is going to be a game changer for start-ups not only in Bahrain but also the whole region, according to the Economic Development Board and AWS.

Amazon’s decision to choose Bahrain as the home for its regional data centre will come with huge economic benefits, according to senior officials from EDB and AWS. “There are tremendous opportunities for economic development and new job creation with cloud computing skills.

We are already seeing massive innovation from across region,” said Teresa Carlson, Vice President, Worldwide Public Sector, Amazon Web Services while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the AWS Summit yesterday.

“We are really excited about the progress that we have been making in the Middle East. It is just amazing to bring cloud computing in a big way to the region,” she said.

“We believe that AWS and cloud computing is going to be a game changer for the start-up community. If you look at the US, 90 per cent of all start-ups run their company on cloud computing and AWS. The Middle East has a very young technology savvy community,” she said. Speaking about the investments in Bahrain, she said, “It is a significant investment.

Also, we are hiring in Bahrain and throughout the region. We are going to be hiring a lot, but we need to give them training first.”
