Exchange robbers lose appeals
The High Appeals Court has upheld the jail terms issued against exchange robbers. The duo, from Serbia and Bosnia, have been put on trial for stealing more than BD2,000 from a currency exchange office in Umm Al Hassam.
They were earlier sentenced to five years in prison each. The defendants were tried on charges, which include robbery and possessing hashish.
According to court files, the Serbian man, aged 24, stormed into the exchange on January 16, 2017, along with his 30-year-old co-defendant, while carrying a taser. He is said to have jumped over the counter, threatened the workers, stolen the money and fled. “A week before the incident, my co-defendant said we should steal money from a currency exchange,” the 30-year-old told prosecutors.
“We discussed the weapon we should use and eventually were able to get a taser because we agreed not to kill anybody,” he added.
