Solving the challenges of food wastage & poverty

The Bhora Community in the Kingdom marked the World Food Day and Anti-Poverty Day by distributing food to the less fortunate. The World Food Day is held annually on 16 October as a day of action dedicated to tackling global hunger, where individuals around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicating worldwide hunger.

The UN’s annual International Anti-Poverty Day is marked on October 17. The Anti-Poverty Week was held from the 14th to the 20th of October under the banner ‘Coming together with those furthest behind to build an inclusive world of universal respect for human rights and dignity’.

Zulfikar Ali Moiz, the spokesperson of the Bohra community, told Tribune that they have managed to help 1275 labourers in the Kingdom, as part of efforts to alleviate hunger through zero wastage of food. “Dana (food Grain) Committee of the Jameat Al Bohra Bahrain donated 800 Meal Packets of Biryani, 300 Kg of Rice, 150 litres of Oil, 300 Kg Sugar, 150 Kg of Wheat Flour, 240 Lt of Milk, Milk Powder, Jam, Coffees & Canned Fruits.”

The three-day initiative resulted in distributing 165 meal packets to a labour camp in Asker on 15 October, 450 meal packets and 200 provision packets to labour camps in Sanad, Tubli and Eker on 16th and 200 meal packets and 160 provision packets to labour Camps in Hidd. “We are practising zero tolerance to food wastage, as there a plenty of individuals in the world who are living in extreme conditions,” Zulfikar added.
