Farmers’ market set to undergo expansion

Expansion plans are underway for the eight months old all-week farmers’ market in Hoorat A’ali, it is learned. The initiative began as an attempt to create a market for local producers apart from ensuring food security. “The expansion plan is very much on and it is important for us to maintain our agricultural heritage,” Shaikh Hesham bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Chairman and Managing Director of Bahrain Business Incubator Company, told Tribune.

This came as the National Initiative for Agricultural Development in co-operation with the Bahrain Development Bank (BDB) and the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs organized the “Al Wasem Exhibition” at the market.

“We have decided to expand the initiative, owing to the support we received from both farmers and customers,” he added. The venue played host to a number of entertaining activities with the participation of a group of farmers, representatives of agriculture nurseries, amateur gardeners and societies exhibiting and selling their products. “This is a wonderful event that places the local producers in touch with the various communities in Bahrain in such a wonderful environment. It is a great initiative to help the local producers,” stated Sanjeev Paul, Group Chief Executive officer for Bahrain Development Bank.

The exhibition proved out to be a commercial platform for participants interested in selling agricultural and gardening products including seeds, plants, agricultural tools, different irrigation systems, and accessories as well as garden furniture.
