Indian maid injured in bid to escape from employer

Manama

An Indian housemaid has been hospitalised after she injured herself while trying to escape from her employer's house. The 34-year-old, who claims to have been overworked and underpaid, escaped from the employer's house last Wednesday.

The incident took place in Karbabad in the wee hours of last Wednesday. Family members of the woman had urged Social worker Salam Mambatumoola to help the housemaid by the name Sheeba. Mambatumoola said that an activist in India informed him about Sheeba's situation and asked him to help.

"I first came to know about this through an Indian newspaper. Later I came in touch with residents of her locality and with the family of the woman in India. With the help of my friends in the Karbabad I obtained her mobile number. I called her up and extended my willingness to help her. She decided to jump out of the window to escape. While she jumped out, she injured her leg and could not walk properly. So I had to admit her to hospital,” he explained.

"I informed the Indian Embassy about the situation and they had talks with the employer. They explained to the employer that she needed to go back to India. The flight ticket has already been booked. She will go to India as soon as she is discharged from the hospital," he added.
