Verdict date set in embezzlement case

The First Higher Criminal Court has decided to issue its verdict on January 30 in a case in which a Labour Ministry employee is accused of embezzling more than BD23,000.

The woman employee is accused of embezzling funds that were meant to be used for a social welfare scheme. According to Prosecutors, BD23,390 was distributed to families earning below BD300 a month in 2014 as a social welfare measure. And after a few months, it was found that the beneficiaries were wrongly chosen.

“The families were asked to return the amount and the accused was in charge of collecting it. Though all families returned the amount they had obtained from the government, the officer only paid BD14, 675 with the government treasury,” they added.
