Bangladeshi nationals jailed for bid to smuggle marijuana

The First High Criminal Court has sentenced two Bangladeshi nationals to 15 years in jail along with a fine of BD5,000 each for attempting to smuggle marijuana into the Kingdom. The incident that led to the case occurred on July 8, 2018. According to court details, the first defendant was arrested at the airport after the customs officials became suspicious of his moves. Upon thorough interrogation and checking, it was found that he was carrying marijuana, they added.

“The drug packets were kept between five books that were packed well along with clothes in an handbag.” From one of the books, the investigators obtained a phone number of the second defendant. The prosecutors said that the second defendant was a drugs trader and he was using the first defendant to smuggle marijuana into the Kingdom.

The first defendant co-operated with the investigating officials to get the second defendant arrested, it is learnt. Both convicts will be deported once they complete their sentences.
