Top sports medicine specialist to offer consultation at AMH

A world-renowned sports medicine specialist from Italy will be available for consultation in the Kingdom, it was announced. Italian sports medicine specialist Prof Paolo Luca Vaglio will be available at American Mission Hospital’s Riffa Medical and Dental Centre ten days every month, it is learnt.

At a press conference held at AMH premises yesterday, Dr George Cheriyan, CEO of AMH announced that Prof Vaglio has become part of the American Mission Hospital and is opening his new sports medicine clinic at Riffa branch. “He will be coming every month for a fixed number of days. His role will be to work with athletes from across the board, whether it is soccer or basketball or Formula 1 or any other sports,” Dr Cheriyan said.

“This is a huge benefit to Bahrain to have a high profile expert in the field,” he added. Prof Vaglio explained that sports medicine involves many aspects including, nutrition, fitness, mental training and injury prevention. “For example, the Formula One star has three aspects to their training including nutrition, maximising fitness, and the mental training.

The most emphasis now is being given to mental training. It is that mental agility that often makes the biggest difference from a good athlete to an outstanding athlete.” Prof Vaglio, who is one of the first doctors to use Growth factors in the treatment of muscle, tendon and cartilage injuries, will be using platelet-rich plasma at the clinic.
