MPs demand to stop applying VAT in schools’ cafeterias

A number of Members of Parliaments (MPs) requested, as a matter of urgency, to stop applying the already applied 5% Value Added Value (VAT) on food sold in the cafeterias of schools to students.

This request received approval of MPS while others questioned it of being a solid fact.

The MPs who raised the request confirmed that they were imposed in schools directly or indirectly by raising prices, while others, who questioned the matter, demanded a proof.

“VAT has been implemented on meals by caterers and with the break being just 35 minutes there is not enough time to calculate the change. If something costs 708 fils, will the students be charged 710 fils or 705 fils,” revealed Ali Al Zayed, Parliament second vice-chairman and bloc member.

“Just imagine the chaos at schools as there are around 500 to 2,000 students in each institution.” He added.
