4 diff-abled UoB students face ‘no transport ordeal’

Differently-abled students, mainly from Muharraq Governorate, at the University of Bahrain (UoB) are facing a daily ordeal after the university cancelled transportation services, according to sources.

It is learnt that the university has not been offering transportation facilities to diff-abled students from the governorate since 2015 and the students find it difficult to attend classes on time. Speaking to Tribune, Abdulaziz Al Hamri, a diff-abled student as well as a member of the University Students Council, said the university should immediately reconsider its decision.

“It is a legal obligation from the part of the university to provide transportation for all students, who are differently-abled. While transportation is available for students from other governorates, why are Muharraq residents being discriminated against?” “There are four students from the governorate, who are visually-challenged. How can the university authorities justify their decision to cancel transportation facilities to these students?”

“The transport facility is being offered as part of the resolution no 12 adopted by the University Board of Directors in the year 2013. “As a member of the Students Council, I have contacted the authorities concerned at the university several times, and frankly speaking, no interest has been given to address this matter, and they informed us that there is no budget for offering transportation to students with special needs, especially those staying in Muharraq
