Drug smugglers lose appeals

The appeals of two Asian men against life imprisonment sentences were rejected by the Supreme Criminal Court of Appeal. The men were previously found guilty in a case that involves smuggling 3.5 kg of marijuana into the Kingdom. The details of case show that the first defendant was arrested at Bahrain International Airport, while attempting to enter Bahrain with the substance stashed in his luggage.

He was detected by the Customs Department officer, who suspected oval-shaped wooden frames placed inside the man’s luggage. They were later proven to be containing marijuana. During police interrogation, the man told that he brought the frames with him, apparently not knowing what’s inside of them, as per a request from a friend here in Bahrain. He explained that it was delivered to him at the airport of his country.

The police officer in charge ordered the man to call his friend to the airport and to agree that he will deliver the frames to him in the parking lots of the airport. The second accused was arrested red-handed receiving marijuana from the first accused. Third and fourth defendants in the case were handed down one year imprisonment along with a fine of BD1,000 each.
