Boeings grounded

A flurry of aviation regulators, air carriers and countries ranging from the United Kingdom to Malaysia, yesterday banned Boeing 737 Max 8 jets, or variants. The bans come after Sunday’s Ethiopian Airlines crash, which resulted in the deaths of 157 people near Addis Ababa.

The European Union and India also banned the Boeing 737 Max from flying over their airspace to ensure passenger safety. In the aftermath of the accident, Ethiopia, Singapore, China, France, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia have all temporarily suspended the 737 Max.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the United Arab Emirates had already banned all operation of Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 9s from flying in its airspace. The planes are not allowed to fly until further notice.

“No operator shall operate the Boeing 737-8 ‘MAX’ and Boeing 737-9 ‘MAX’ aircraft from, in to or over the United Arab Emirates Airspace,” the GCAA said in a statement.
