Lawmakers propose to double welfare payments for disabled
They said that in many cases the disabled are the sole breadwinners of the families
A proposal has been made to double the disability welfare payments made by the government. The proposal which was unanimously approved by MPs aim to raise the disability payment to BD 200 per month.
Parliamentarians have called on to increase the amount, citing the difficulties faced by the disabled and their families. They said that in many cases the disabled are the sole breadwinners of the families. MP Mohammed Buhamood said that the amount is too low for the disabled to pay for their treatment or even to pay for their day-to-day expenses. He said that it is time for the government to review the situation.
“The special needs person sometimes represent the sole breadwinner of the family and they struggle to meet expenses. “The Constitution of the Kingdom guarantees social security for all citizens including the sick, those struggling with old age, unemployed, orphans and the disabled. It is time to increase the monthly payment to BD200,” he pointed out.
MP Mohammed Al Ansari also voiced his support for the proposal. “I personally know many families who have disabled children who are trying their best to take care of them, but are struggling financially. They urgently need more financial support.”
