Drug traffickers’ trial date set

The trial of 10 defendants accused of attempting to smuggle large quantities of drugs into the Kingdom from Iran through sea will begin on May 5, 2019, it was confirmed yesterday. This was announced by Capital Governorate Chief Prosecutor Nawaf Al Awadhi, who said in a statement issued yesterday that the Public Prosecution has completed its investigations into the case, interrogated the suspects and referred them to the First High Criminal Court.

Nine of the defendants will stand before the judges on the charges of trafficking and possessing drugs with the purpose of selling, while the tenth defendant has been accused of practicing financial activities without permission from the Central Bank of Bahrain.

According to Mr. Al Awadhi’s statement, one of the defendants was initially arrested and he subsequently led to the remaining suspects, informing that a shipment of narcotic substances would arrive in Bahrain from Iran through the sea.

The concerned authorities traced the shipment until it entered the territorial waters of the Kingdom, stopped it and arrested the suspects. More than 100 kilograms of drugs (hashish, marijuana, and methamphetamine) was found in the suspects’ possession, in addition to cash amounts from the sale of drugs and in various currencies.
