It’s a total waste
Nearly 150 tonnes of food was wasted in the Capital Governorate every day during the first three months of 2019, according to statistics by the Capital Governorate. “High amount of household waste was collected in the first three months of this year,” a municipality representative said.
“During analysis, it was found that around 30 percent of it was food waste.” The representative further warned that this could rise during Ramadan if people are not cautious. The Capital Municipality collected 47,575 tonnes of domestic waste during the past three months.
Plastic ranks second
Plastic emerged as the second most contributor to household waste. In response, the municipality said it recently organised an exhibition to raise awareness on reducing food wastage at The Avenues Bahrain.
“The aim was to raise awareness among families on how much food is being wasted and what they can do to improve the situation,” the representative said.
Northern governorate
Meanwhile, the Northern governorate announced that 22000 tonnes of household waste were collected from there in the first two months of this year. This is in addition to the 4,000 tonnes of construction waste and 6500 tonnes of agricultural waste collected during January and February from the Governorate.
