12 Cops On Trial for Attacking Inmates in Jau Prison

The Lower Criminal Court began hearing the trial of 12 police officers accused of beating prisoners in Jau Prison.

The accused cops have been put on trial after the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) which is responsible for probing such cases found them involved in torturing inmates in the prison.

According to a statement issued by Mohammed Al Hazza, acting general attorney and president of SIU the defendants have been officially charged with torturing after the Unit completed its investigation into physical assault allegations raised up by several inmates.

He said the unit heard the testimonies of several inmates as well as the officer in charge of the prison and it was confirmed that the attacks were individualistic and several inmates got injured because of them.

"The SIU has concluded with the accused men responsible for the assaults thanks to the provided pieces of proof and testimonies," he added.
