Blinking green cuts accident rate

Red light violations are on the decline in the Kingdom, thanks to the newly introduced flashing green and red light systems. The system provides drivers sufficient time for a safe stop and is so far successful, said the General Directorate of Traffic.  The Technical committee of Traffic Council introduced the system following suggestions received from the general public.

The system, Director General of the General Directorate of Traffic Brigadier Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdul Wahab Al Khalifa said, flashes the green lights thrice before switching on to yellow and red lights at intersections. General Directorate of Traffic is coordinating closely with the Ministry of works to enhance road safety measures.

The new system, first introduced at Al Fateh intersection, the Crown Prince Street and the BDF hospital intersection, has been expanded to several other areas. Earlier this month, the system started working at the Crown Prince Street with 38th Street and Road and Road 2819, the intersection of Al-Fateh Street with Bani Otba Street, Intersection of Al Istiklal Street with Al Mahzoura Street, the intersection of the Dry Dock Road with Amwaj entrance, the intersection of Al Moaskar Street and 96th Street, Sheikh Salman Street intersection with 16th December Street, the intersection of Al Moaskar Street with 95th Street, and Sheikh Salman Street intersection with Amman Street. Currently, all the traffic signals with the new system are in a testing phase.
