Court upholds death sentence of cop killer

The Court of Cassation upheld the death sentence awarded to a man accused of murdering an on-duty policeman four years ago in the Northern Governorate.

The attack, known as “Abu Saiba Terrorist Bombing”, on 28 August 2015 also resulted in injuring several policemen and civilians. The accused previously had his appeal rejected by the Supreme Criminal Court of Appeal. The Court of Cassation rejected his second appeal.

A total of 32 suspects were involved in the case. They previously received sentences varying between life in prison and revocation of their citizenships.

The suspects, according to Court files, are members of an internationally banned terrorist organisation ‘Saraaya Al Ashtar’ or Al Ashtar Brigades, responsible for many attacks in the Kingdom. The court jailed 13 of the suspects to life on charges of forming a terrorist cell and receiving militant training abroad.

Twenty-five were strippedoff their citizenships, while another 22 were ordered to collectively pay for the damages caused to private properties.
