Planting evergreen friendship

It’s hard not to be impressed by India’s miracle Neem well know for its medicinal properties and ability to protect the environment. Its uses are so diverse that Neem is often referred to as the ‘village pharmacy’ of South Asia.

So, it wasn’t a surprise the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) has chosen to plant 150 Neem trees for Bahrain-India Friendship Garden in Sitra. The garden has been built using the latest designs and advanced irrigation systems to keep the evergreen trees healthy.

Indian Ambassador Alok Kumar Sinha and United Nations Environment Office in West Asia Regional Director Sami Dimassi were present during the inauguration. Sinha said the park is a translation of the friendly relations between the two countries and is an appreciation of India’s status.

The ambassador further stressed the historical ties and the strength of trade and economic relations. GPIC, President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said, selected neem for its ability to grow in dry environments.

A scientific study has nominated Neem as the 21st-century tree highlighting its uses in the pharmaceutical and pest control industry, including agricultural and insect repellents. The tree is also a new source of biofuel production as well as its superior air purification capacity
