Permanent Mission of Bahrain to UN in New York participates in World Day of Bicycles

In an effort to bring the bicycle and cycling back in vogue, Bahrain’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York took part in the anniversary of the World Cycling Day. Held every year on June 3, UN last year declared World Bicycle Day as a celebration of the “uniqueness, longevity, and versatility” of the bicycle.

This year’s event was held at the headquarters of the Organisation in the presence of the President of the United Nations General Assembly, María Fernanda Espinosa, the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, several athletes and activists promoting bicycles as a healthy and safe way to navigate.

Espinosa highlighted bicycle as a tool for development and as a means not only for transport but also access to education, health care and sports which is closely linked to the achievements of the sustainable development goals. She thanked the countries that submitted the draft resolution last year and the sponsors of this event namely, Bahrain, Turkmenistan, Canada, India, Indonesia and Liechtenstein.

CEO and Co-Founder of Novo-Nordisk, Phil Sutherland, spoke about the importance of cycling in improving the health of individuals and communities. Reviewing his personal experience as a diabetic patient, Sutherland said, “By adopting a healthy lifestyle by riding a bike and promoting health practices has significantly improved my health.” This, he said, has prompted his company to work with several communities around the world to promote bicycles to exercise and contribute to combating climate change.
