Arab man gets one-year jail for fraud

Manama

An Arab man accused of fraud has been sentenced to one year behind bars. However, he is at large and was convicted before the High Criminal Court in absentia.  The defendant allegedly bought himself a brand new luxury car worth BD28,000 after posing as a medical doctor to get a an auto loan of the same value. The defendant deceived a loan officer in a local bank by forging his occupation and his salary certificate.

It’s said that he had submitted an employment letter which indicated that he was working at King Hamad Hospital as a physician. He also presented a salary certificate stating that his monthly wage was BD2600. When he received the loan, he spent it by buying a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser, with which he drove out the country heading to Jordan via the King Fahd Causeway in 2012.

The bank said, it discovered the defendant’s escape after it failed to receive the second installment of the loan disbursed. Prosecutors had charged him with forgery, but it’s not clear if an arrest warrant has been issued to capture him.
