Couple in dock for peddling drugs, prostitution

The High Criminal Court has sentenced a Thai couple to five years in jail on charges of drug trafficking and another year for prostitution. The court also ordered them to pay a fine of BD3,000. The man involved was given an additional 10 days imprisonment for overstaying his visa. The Thai woman was allegedly trafficking Methamphetamine, a drug locally known as “Shabu”, in Bahrain for BD200- BD500 through her boyfriend who played the role of a middleman.

Court files say the woman was extremely cautious and never revealed her identity to customers. She landed in police custody when an undercover agent managed to win their confidence by offering to buy shabu worth of BD440. The agent was taken to the couple’s apartment, following a meeting held in Juffair. After sealing the deal, the agent alerted the Anti-narcotics squad to raid the apartment.

Officers retrieved the money paid by the agent as well as several tools including a delicate scale and a bag a shabu from the woman’s possession. Another woman, present inside the apartment at the time of the raid, was also taken into custody. The woman initially claimed that she wasn’t involved in drugs trafficking while confessing that she was a prostitute and charged BD30-BD40 per hour from customers.

The boyfriend, however, refuted her claims and told prosecutors that she masterminded the drug business, while also admitting his hand in the prostitution.
